J.D. Edwards, founded in 1977, provides business-to-business software and services that enable collaborative commerce between companies, their suppliers, and other business partners. The company's new corporate headquarters is located on 60+ acres within the Denver Technology Center. Planning began in 1997 and all four phases of the project are now completed. The Denver-based landscape architecture firm, Civitas, worked with the building architects to provide design guidelines for the entire campus. Civitas landscape architects Melanie Klein and Craig Vickers created a master plan for the site and designed all of the outdoor areas related to the campus's four buildings, including streetscapes, plazas, courtyards, and gardens.

"We gave a lot of attention to the streetscape," Melanie Klein explains. "There is a shuttle service throughout the Center and we designed walkways and drop-off spaces with benches where people can wait for rides." Civitas also designed discreet, hospitable areas with benches and urns for use by smokers (smoking is prohibited inside), as well as two major courtyard spaces. "Originally, J.D. Edwards just asked us to site some sculptures that have special meaning for the company," Melanie says. "We convinced them to create a space that was more of a garden - a location in which people would meet." The garden setting that Civitas devised contains a water feature and a sunken courtyard with benches around the perimeter. The design and plantings focus attention on the bronze sculptures at the heart of the space. Called the Employee Garden, it is a peaceful spot for relaxing and lunching outdoors. The second space is larger in scale and less ntimate in design. "In addition to being a place where employees can eat lunch and relax, J.D. Edwards wanted to use this space for group meetings," Melanie says. All of these spaces have been enthusiastically embraced and heavily used by company employees. "J.D. Edwards knew what they wanted these spaces to do," concludes Melanie, "but I think they have been pleasantly surprised at just how important they ended up being."
