Kalamazoo, MI - Landscape Forms is pleased to announce that its Lo-Glo LED light is among forty-two LED lighting products recognized for excellence by the third annual Next Generation Luminaires™ (NGL) Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Design Competition. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the International Association of Lighting Designers, the NGL competition was launched in 2008 to promote excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED luminaries for general illumination in commercial lighting applications.
While 328 products were proposed for submission in 2010, only 138, representing 61 different manufacturers, made it to the judging phase. NGL-recognized products must satisfy stringent criteria for suitability and quality as well as energy efficiency. Detailed documentation required for consideration, including LM-70 test reports and LM-80 life claim performance documents, ensures that actual performance matches claims. “This is not just a beauty contest,” said DOE Solid-State Lighting Program Manager Jim Brodrick. “The winners also have to perform well.”
Landscape Forms, known for its high-design site furniture products, was a relative newcomer to lighting just a few years ago. In developing its lighting products today the company employs innovative applications of LED technology and engineered optics to reduce energy consumption, control light pollution and provide light quality that supports human health and well being. The Lo-Glo pathway light, with its taller companion Hi-Glo pedestrian light, are part of Landscape Forms’ Metro40 Collection of products for the urban streetscape and transit core, designed in collaboration with BMW Group DesignWorksUSA. Since their introduction in 2009 the lights have won several prestigious design awards, including IDEA, ID Magazine Annual Design Review, GOOD DESIGN, Green GOOD DESIGN and FX International Interior Design awards.
In this context, NGL recognition of Lo-Glo as “Notable” has special meaning. “This is a validation that is different from some of the design awards we’ve already won,” explained Rick Utting, Landscape Forms Engineering Manager. “It comes from the lighting community which has its own high standards and we are pleased to be recognized as part of that community.” Landscape Forms lighting engineer, Brandon Renouf added, “Competitors included major lighting companies like GE and Philips. To be considered alongside companies on that level for recognition of the performance of our lighting acknowledges the validity of our work.”
