Kalamazoo, MI - Landscape Forms, North American’s largest designer and manufacturer of site furniture, announces the introduction of the Maggie Bench and Charlie Table, a dynamic duo of furniture designs from renowned landscape architects Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN).
Originally designed by GGN for Chicago’s Millennium Park, the Maggie Bench complements the contemporary and historic elements of its context while standing alone as a beautiful object. Maggie expresses the form and gesture of the human body with the simple elegance that is a GGN signature. This metal bench has a dignified profile and fluid form. Its subtly contoured seat and back provide comfort and a palette of paint finishes provides complimentary color. Now, as part of the Landscape Forms standard product portfolio, the Maggie Bench lends its sophisticated presence to a wide variety of outdoor environments.
The Charlie Table, also originally designed for Millennium Park, expresses the vitality of urban public spaces. In this painted steel table with connected benches, GGN has created a place for resting and relaxation that re-imagines the traditional picnic table. Charlie’s tabletop and seats are connected, lifted and supported by the swooping lines of legs with an asymmetrical arrangement. The oval form allows up to six people to sit comfortably on the benches enhancing social interaction. The open ends of the table provide wheelchair access.
About Gustafson Guthrie Nichol
Founded in Seattle by partners Kathryn Gustafson, Jennifer Guthrie and Shannon Nichol, GGN works through the Americas and Asia. GGN designers bring professional backgrounds in landscape, architecture, engineering, graphics, ecology and other sciences, to the design of landscape environments and elements within them. The designs express sculptural qualities of contextual landscape. The firm has special experience in designing high-use landscapes in complex, urban contexts. On rooftops, between buildings, or suspended in the air, GGN’s landscapes are widely varied but share qualities as healthy settings for diverse and ever-changing activities. The local complexities of human experience and natural systems are deeply embedded into GGN’s landforms. This creates landscapes that are serenely grounded while also feeling alive and comfortable at all times – whether bustling with crowds, offering moments of contemplation, or doing both at once. As author Jane Amidon describes, GGN’s gentle warping and cutting (or cupping and canting) of land form in both plan and section allows a flexible perception of spatial volume, enabling the site to be "empty when full, full when empty.” GGN’s recent project awards include multiple ASLA National Design Excellence Awards, Tuck Architectural Awards and AIA/ASLA Honor and Merit awards for Design.
